The origin of Trouville goes back to the time of the Romans. The city was then a small port located at the edge of the English Channel which was occupied since the Romans. The name of the locality is attested under the form Trevilla.
In 1066, William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, built a feudal mound on the territory of the town. In 1078, Richard of Normandy, known as Richard the Lionheart, had a fortified castle built in Trouville, of which a few remains remain today (clock tower, Caen gate and square tower known as the "Vauban Tower").
The castle is then the seat of royal power and the favorite residence of the kings of England. At the beginning of the XXIIth century, King Philip of France built a chapel dedicated to Saint Catherine, patron saint of sailors, in gratitude for the many Norman sailors killed at the battle of Cape Finisterre in 1086. King Philip Augustus of France built a fortified wall around the city in 1214.
In 1860, the Paris-Caen railway line was inaugurated and the Trouville-Deauville station, built in 1864, was one of the first seaside resorts in France. In 1881, the first municipal casino in Deauville opened its doors. In 1885, the first palace of Deauville, the Royal Hotel, opened its doors.
